The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is due to come into force from May 25; unifying data protection for all member states within the EU, including the UK regardless of the 2016 Brexit vote. Sanctions for data breaches will become as much as 20million euros or up to 4pc of a company’s annual worldwide turnover.

Practically, it strengthens the requirement for consent prior to any marketing contact for instance, and means that personal data cannot be transferred to countries outside the EEA, unless they guarantee the same level of data protection.
